Communication Consultants Deborah St James and Stephanie Roberson Barnard have collaborated since 1996, when Deborah hired Stephanie to train health care professionals for Bayer Corporation’s Writing and Speaking for Excellence series. Through this popular speaker series, they trained thousands of physicians, pharmacists, and nurses and co-authored the Yale University Press book, Writing, Speaking, & Communication Skills for Health Professionals (2001).
Their newest book, Listen. Write. Present.: The Elements for Communicating Science and Technology (Yale Press 2012) is the foundation for the consulting firm, Listen Write Present LLC.
Stephanie Roberson Barnard started her own freelance public relations business 20 years ago. As her business evolved, she developed a niche market for coaching others on communication skills. She has trained thousands of pharmaceutical industry professionals on how to be more effective speakers, writers, and communicators. She has written patient education literature, developed online video compliance training modules, and helped create and implement personalized communication training plans for pharmaceutical executives.
In addition to her work in the pharmaceutical industry, Stephanie has coached hundreds of professionals on presentation skills for FDA hearings, CFO reports, and scientific speaker programs, as well as national and international congresses. She has consulted for numerous corporations including AstraZeneca, Bayer Corporation, Merck, Pfizer, and Boehringer Ingelheim; medical and pharmacy schools across the country including UNC, Duke, and Johns Hopkins; and multiple professional organizations such as the American Society for Health Care Pharmacists, The American College of Physicians, and the American Medical Writers Association.
Deborah St James has over 30 years experience in editing and training. She was Director of Scientific Communications and Publication Planning at Grifols and Manager of Editorial Services at Bayer Corporation, Pharmaceutical Division in West Haven, CT, where she developed and directed Bayer’s Writing and Speaking for Excellence seminars—workshops specifically designed for physicians, pharmacists, and other health care professionals.
Deborah is former Editor of Better Health magazine and has taught English, technical, business, and medical writing at both the graduate and postgraduate levels. She is the author of Writing and Speaking for Excellence: A guide for Physicians and co-editor of Empathy and the Practice of Medicine and Doctors Afield. Deborah has trained thousands of professionals how to write for publication, prepare for job interviews, present at national medical meetings, and lead patient advocacy organizations. A popular national speaker, Deborah is an annual public speaking coach for American Urological Association presenters, a regular speaker for the International AIDS Society, and a trainer for patient leaders in the Alpha-1 Association.
Deborah is an advocate for mental health illnesses, women in business, and canine rescue and is often asked to advise others in these areas.
