As a Patient Leader or Advocate you may be communicating with healthcare providers, family members, the newly diagnosed, the press, or members of congress. To be effective, you must communicate clearly, concisely, and confidently. We believe patients and their advocates—just like healthcare and pharmaceutical professionals—should have the skills they need to be able to convey their key message to any audience, in any setting, in 60 seconds or less.

Communicating for Excellence: 2-4 hours
In this multi-faceted workshop, you will learn how to use the six basic traits of excellent communication in order to get what you need; assess your personal communication style and understand ways to adapt your style to others; and improve your listening, persuasion, and observation skills. We’ll practice steps for dealing with abrupt, rushed, upset, or difficult people and show you tips on how to communicate for mutual understanding. This course will help you to collaborate with others at all levels in all types of organizations; develop creative solutions to deal with challenging people; and build confidence, credibility, and respect for opinions.

Communicating to Be a Smarter Patient: 1-2 hours
During the past decade, we’ve seen unprecedented advances in medical knowledge and technology: modern medications, innovative treatments, and faster and more accurate diagnostic tests. Yet, at times both healthcare providers and patients become frustrated with the healthcare system and the overwhelming amount of information available online. While there is no quick fix, there are ways you can improve your relationship with your healthcare providers to assure you receive the quality care you deserve. This course will help you learn to actively listen to your providers about your symptoms; prepare the right questions before every appointment; tell your story: clearly, concisely, convincingly; stop an interruption—courteously and politely; and find a friend in a pharmacist.

Writing for Excellence in the Medical Setting: 2-4 hours
Clear writing = clear thinking. Learn to write more clearly, concisely, convincingly, and confidently. Learn to successfully manage varied writing projects including emails, letters, grant proposals, and newsletters. Learn to build credibility and support for your ideas through persuasive words, repetition, transition, and parallel construction. Identify the most common problems in grammar, punctuation, and word usage. Learn how to edit your own work and identify venues to publish your message including hometown newspapers, alumni newsletters, websites, and other social media.

Writing Grant Applications: 2-4 hours
This specialized course focuses on the principles of writing a proposal that gets funded. You will learn how to prepare to write a grant proposal, how to use an outline or shell document to guide the grant-writing process, and how to revise the application. You will also learn steps for targeting appropriate funding sources, understanding the review process and the psychology of reviewers, and following directions to make the final cut. To make sure your application is well-written, we’ll teach you common writing errors and how to use clear, concise, and persuasive language to build your argument.

Writing an Essay for Publication: 1-2 hours
This writing workshop addresses how to organize your research or ideas for a professional trade or scientific journal. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the steps to planning, writing, and submitting a paper. You’ll also learn how to collaborate to your advantage, choose an appropriate topic, and select an appropriate journal and audience. To make sure your paper is well-written and doesn’t end up in the “slush pile,” we’ll teach you how to become familiar with each journal’s guidelines, understand the best way to query an editor, recognize how editors and reviewers think, and persevere despite rejection. Finally, we’ll make sure you can spot the most common errors in writing and fix them.

Speaking for Excellence When the Topic Is Personal: 1-2 hours
Sometimes preparing a talk about a personal topic can be harder than preparing for a topic that’s completely new. This course is designed to help you become an effective speaker when your topic might be emotional. It includes information on how to prepare presentations for specific purposes, audiences, and settings. In this interactive workshop, we’ll discuss strategies for the best ways to organize and deliver a talk as well as how to manage anxiety and deal with difficult audience members and situations. We’ll also describe how to best design and edit slides to increase legibility and readability and teach you the best way to introduce a speaker.

Practicing Your Presentation Skills in a Small Group: 4 hours for 8 participants
In this workshop, each participant gives a brief presentation that is video recorded and critiqued by peers. We’ll discuss voice, articulation, body language, and use of visual aids. We’ll also discuss techniques to stimulate audience interest and involvement and strategies to help facilitate audience recall of the message. Each participant receives a download of his or her presentation within a week, as well as a personalized presentation Skill Builder at the end of the session.

One-on-One Presentation Skills, half hour slots
The greatest idea in the world has little value if it is not presented clearly, concisely, and convincingly. A private appointment with a public speaking skills coach will sharpen your presentation skills through personalized attention. This tailored workshop will give you the opportunity to

Running an Effective Meeting: 1-2 hours
Nothing is more exhilarating than a productive meeting. This fast-paced, interactive workshop will help you learn to plan, execute, and follow up a meeting. You’ll learn how to determine if a meeting is necessary, draft a meaningful agenda, and organize people for productive conversations. You’ll learn delivery tips for starting on time and staying on task and drawing everyone into the conversation. Finally, you will understand how to follow up from a meeting by generating constructive meeting minutes.

Making the Most of Teleconferences and Webinars: 1-2 hours
Teleconferences and webinars are a great way to gather people for a meeting without the travel, but they pose unique communication challenges. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to plan, organize, and facilitate them to maximize time and productivity. You’ll also learn how to encourage participant contributions, minimize dominating speakers, and make the most of technology. We’ll review general etiquette for webinars and conference calls and give you tips on how to be a better-prepared participant.
